The decorations have come down. The parties have been celebrated. The gifts unwrapped (and hopefully played with or used). The twinkle of tinsel is wearing off. Glowing lights are slowly dimming. A new year is freshly upon us.
New focuses and new goals are being unearthed, dreamed and maybe even planned for. Where are you with your resolutions on this 9th day of January?
And by resolutions I mean goals, dreams, plan, ideas… Where is your 2019 headed so far?
Mine, mine is on track for the first time in a long time and I want yours to be too. Really, I do. Whether you believe in resolutions or just simply setting goals. Whether you believe is focusing or winging it. Whether you think you can or think you can’t. Well, you know the truth, what you think will be.
This year I am choosing to believe that my resolutions are attainable and that they matter and that I can create my own reality and success. And where I haven’t always been great at the setting and succeeding, in fact, I am have always been more of a set them and forget them gal, this year is different. This is different because last year was different too. Instead of setting multiple lofty resolutions last year, I simply resolved to be more vibrant. I chose a word and I chased it. I thought about it daily and I attempted things and strived to achieve anything that made me feel more vibrant. What I learned in setting a word for my resolution is there is an ease in accomplishment. There is success. However, I also learned that setting a few specific goals around the word chosen allows for a deeper connection to the loftier goal. Also, a year will not end with missed opportunities and regret that a specific unidentified goal was really the main goal.
2019 is here, and where we are 9 days in, it is never too late to set goals, dreams, resolutions if you will. If you haven’t, join me now, will you? Let’s set some intentions for 2019.
– First –
Buy a journal dedicated to tracking your goals, dreams, intentions or resolutions for 2019. A dedicated space for you to jot down progress. Whether you bullet point ideas, write lengthy paragraphs or draw pictures, create a space for your year. a space for you.
– Second –
Select a word. Any word. A word that inspires and drives you. A word you are longing to become. A word that feels like the end goal. A word that you think about as soon as you wake and think about until you sleep. What is your word?
This year my word is: INTENTION.
– Third –
There’s a reason why this word was selected. You chose this word for a specific reason whether you know it or not. Dig deep, decide. Define the word for yourself. Put all of your thoughts in your journal. Draw, jot, bullet, paragraph. Whatever you do, map it out fully. Defining the word honestly is so very important to keeping in step with your goals and keeping your eye on the dreams of your year. Get gritty, be honest, it’s your space.
– Fourth –
Pick a few (I chose 5) straight forward goals, that if accomplished, directly impact the success of your chosen word.
Last year I picked vibrant, but did not define any goals. As a result when the year closed out I felt regret. Where I had become more vibrant in many ways, there was one very specific way that vibrance was not accomplished. I realized that was my top priority after all, but since I had not defined it, added any color to it or specified goals, I did not accomplish it. My word felt a bit like a bust.
Take time to map out very detailed reasons why these goals matter. Write them out. Write the negative impact of carrying them as they are have. The dirty words associated with not changing. The terrible feelings or the lack of success that will remain if these goals aren’t met. Clear your mind of your hurdles, fears and excuses with pen to paper. Then write all the positives that will stem from meeting these goals. All the beautiful words that fill your head and heart when thinking about each goal met. Beautiful pen to paper drafting and envisioning your new reality.
– Fifth –
Take actions daily. Read. Write. Interview. Move. Drink water. Eat one less sweet treat. Put pennies in the bank for that trip. Take actions daily. And write, take note, bullet point. Do what you can to track your progress.
The gap between dreams and goals, goals and success is large. It’s vast. Each day, the goal feels huge and the results / success feels far. Take the time to process the in-between. Each little victory will absolutely make a difference in the long run, but until then, take note and ensure to give yourself grace. Because we all face a two steps forward one step back occasionally.
Here’s to 2019!
